Manage your font suitcases and printer fonts in 'Sets', like Extensions Manager!
Fonts Manager is similar to the Mac OS Extensions Manager, but it is more like a Desk Accessory. It allows the enabling and disabling of font suitcases and printer fonts in 'Sets'. It supports view/print font samples, export of 'Sets', import of saved 'Sets', Balloon Help, and a Tutorial Topics system. It is NOT a Control Panel or Extension; thus it works on ALL Macs with System 7.1 or later, including Mac OS 8, without modifying the NORMAL startup and operation of your computer. Thousands worldwide running all kinds of Macs (and Mac OS compatibles) have switched to Fonts Manager to get 'Up & Running'.
Based on your screen size (for US/International/Roman version ONLY), you need to pick either the Small or Larger version. You should see two items in each folder. Just double-click on Fonts Manager™. It automatically moves 'Fonts Manager™ Help' to the Preferences folder (and moves an older version of the help file to the trash). Keep this ReadMe file handy. You may need it one day.

If you are upgrading from a previous version, don't forget to save your sets in the old version, so you can open them in the new version! Version 3.6 or later is required to implement this upgrade feature. Look for this option in the File menu.
NOTE: It is required that you install Fonts Manager™ onto your "Startup Disk". It will not run from another drive or partition.

Although I make no specific guarantee as to the performance of this software, I use it regularly at work (Apple) and at home. I use an original, non-backlit Macintosh Portable (68000@16 MHz), an LC III (68030@25 MHz), a Performa 575 w/Macintosh Processor Upgrade (68LC040@33MHz / 601@66MHz), a Quadra 800 (68040@33MHz), a PowerMac 8100/100AV (601@100MHz), a PowerMac 8500/120 w/Pentium card (604@120MHz / Pentium@100MHz), a Workgroup Server 9150/80 (601@80MHz), a Performa 6400/200 w/AVID Cinema (603ev@200MHz), and a most excellent PowerBook Duo 2300c w/Duo Dock Plus (603e@100MHz). How many ways do I need to say this?
When you have paid, you will be sent authentication information. Select Register Now! from the Register menu in Fonts Manager to enter this information. This will remove the message at startup, and add your authentication to the splash screen. This will serve as proof to institutional auditors that you have paid for this software.
If you do not have an email address, please enter your complete postal address and please remember, I do not know what country you live in so please enter that into the postal address also.
Single user licenses

Payment
Paying for Fonts Manager is fairly simple. Open the enclosed Register application. Enter your name, your email address, and the number of single user licenses you wish to purchase (or Site or World-Wide licenses). Save or Copy or Print the data from the Register application and send the data and payment to Kagi.
Credit Card / First Virtual
If paying with credit card or First Virtual, you can email or fax the data to Kagi. Their email address is sales@kagi.com and their fax number is (510) 652-6589. You can either Copy the data from Register and paste into the body of an email message or you can Save the data to a file and you can attach that file to an email message. There is no need to compress the data file; it's already very small. If you have a fax modem, just Print the data to the Kagi fax number.
Payments sent to Kagi via email are processed within 3 to 4 days. You will receive an email acknowledgement when it is processed. Payments sent via fax take up to 10 days and if you provide a correct internet email address you will receive an email acknowledgement.
Cash or US$ Check
Please don't forget that you can send US$ cash directly to me (Ed) at the address above. Same with a US$ check. Kagi does charge a small amount, so I get more out of your $10 if you send it directly to me. (Thanks!)
If you are paying with non-US$ Cash you should print the data using the Register application and send it to the address shown on the form, which is:

You can pay with a wide variety of currencies from different countries, but at present if you pay by check, it must be a check drawn in US Dollars. Kagi cannot accept checks in other currencies; the conversion rate for non-US$ checks is about US $15 per check and that is just not practical.
Invoice
If you have a purchasing department, you can enter all the data into the Register program and then select Invoice as your payment method. Print three copies of the invoice and send it to your accounts payable people. You may want to highlight the line that mentions that they must include a copy of the invoice with their payment. Kagi cannot bill your company directly - you need to act on my behalf to generate the invoice and handle all the paperwork on your end.
Physical vs. Electronic
Please do not fax or email payment forms that indicate Cash, Check, or Invoice as the payment method. As far as we know, there is still no technology to transfer physical objects via fax or email, and without the payment, the form cannot be processed.
Postal mail delays
Payments sent via postal mail take time to reach Kagi and then up to 10 days for processing. Again, if you include a correct email address, you will hear from Kagi when the form is processed.
• If your fonts are not showing up in Fonts Manager™, the fonts may be damaged. I highly recommend simply reinstalling a fresh copy of the font. To remove fonts, you must first drag the Fonts folder OUT of the System Folder. Then, you may trash specific fonts at will.
• Another reason fonts may not show is you've got screen fonts NOT INSIDE suitcases in your Fonts folder. To fix this, make new suitcases for these 'loose' fonts.
• Orphaned screen fonts - Aaron uses a screen font called Espy Sans 10. This screen font belongs inside a suitcase, but it is NOT distributed this way. Outside of a suitcase, a screen font is likely to become damaged; consequently, Fonts Manager was designed to display orphaned screen fonts in the printer fonts section to alert you to this error. To correct for orphaned screen fonts, make a new suitcase (duplicate an existing suitcase, rename it, and empty it), and drop your orphaned screen font inside the new suitcase. So, using Aaron as an example: make a new empty suitcase called Aaron (exact name not important), and drop Espy Sans 10 inside the new Aaron suitcase.
• You may keep Fonts Manager™ stored anywhere you like - I prefer the Apple Menu. To do this, open your System Folder, and drop Fonts Manager™ into your Apple Menu Items folder. Keep this ReadMe file handy. You may need it one day.
• For localized (non-US) System Software versions, to make command-key combinations work properly, select the 'US' keyboard layout from the layout (flag) menu just to the right of the Apple Guide menu.
• If for some reason Fonts Manager™ fails, and you must restart (this can happen with any application you know), the Fonts folder inside the System Folder may be empty. DO NOT panic. This is OK. Inside the System Folder you'll see the main 'Fonts' folder and two new folders: 'Fonts (Printer Fonts)' and 'Fonts (Suitcases)'. All of your fonts will be in one of these three folders. Move the contents of 'Fonts (Printer Fonts)' and 'Fonts (Suitcases)' back into the main 'Fonts' folder to reinstall them. Don't move the two folders themselves (NOTE: Any folders nested inside the main 'Fonts' folder are completely ignored). Then restart.
• If you use EvenBetterBusError, or some other error-catching extension, and you get an unimplemented trap at quit, you may wish to download the software again from the InfoMac site. I've posted the fix only at InfoMac. You can tell if you have the fixed version if there is any reference at all to EvenBetterBusError in the Read Me or Tutorial Topics.
• If you have a large number of fonts, you may wish to increase the memory allocation above 1024k. To do this, Get Info on a FRESH copy of Fonts Manager™, and change the Preferred Size. I would suggest starting with as much as 8192k, and working your way down, depending on the amount of unused RAM you have to work with.
• It's a good idea to quit all applications before running Fonts Manager™, so you'll have all of your memory available.

• If you've had Extension conflicts at startup or any problems, especially with another font management utility (or it is still installed), you may need to do a 'clean install' of your System Software, due to damage the utility might have caused. This works 100% of the time.
Clean Install For System 7.1 thru Mac OS 8:
1 - Startup with Disk Tools (or your System CD).
2 - Run Disk First Aid, and repair the hard drive. Quit Disk First Aid.
3 - Run Apple HD SC Setup (or Drive Setup), and update the driver. Quit.
4 - Open your hard drive, and rename your System Folder to 'Storage' (exact spelling not crucial).
5 - Open the Storage folder, and drag two files to the Trash. System and Finder. Empty the Trash.
6 - Close all windows. If you have no System CD, restart with 'Install Me First' (or first System disk).
- If you have a System CD, restart again, letting the computer automatically startup with the System CD.
7 - Install your System Software with 'Easy Install'. Restart normally (VERY IMPORTANT).
7a - If you have EITHER System 7.1, and need to reinstall System Update 3.0 from floppy disk OR System 7.5 (any version), and need to reinstall System 7.5 Update 2.0 from floppy disk, THEN restart again w/Extensions OFF (holding shift key at startup), and install the update. Restart normally (VERY IMPORTANT).
7b - If you need to reinstall System 7.5 Update 2.0 from CD, restart again holding down the SPACE BAR until you see the Extensions Manager window open. From the 'Sets' menu, select the 'system' set (i.e., 'System 7.5.x'). Close the window, letting the computer continue starting up. When startup is complete, insert the update CD and install the update. Restart normally (VERY IMPORTANT). After restart, reconfigure Extensions Manager appropriately.
7c - If you have System 7.5.3 (any Revision) and need to reinstall System 7.5.5 Update from floppy disk, restart again w/Extensions OFF (holding shift key at startup), and install the update. Restart normally (VERY IMPORTANT).
7d - If you have Mac OS 7.6 and need to reinstall Mac OS 7.6.1 Update from floppy disk, restart again w/Extensions Disabled* (holding shift key at startup), and install the update. Restart normally (VERY IMPORTANT).
8 - After the installation(s), you'll need to reinstall your applications, as well as your fonts. But try Fonts Manager™ first, before you do this (after all, this is why you're here).
- To reinstall your fonts, simply drop each font onto the CLOSED System Folder icon on the hard drive. You'll get the standard message about Font installation. Click OK to proceed. If you do NOT get the message, it's a good chance you're trying to install a damaged font.
- To reinstall your applications (or any software that has an 'installer'), do the following:
Floppy disk installations:
1) Restart w/Extensions OFF* (holding shift key at startup).
1a) If you are using Extensions Manager (if you have System 7.5 or later, you should be), open Extensions Manager, and select 'All On'. Close the Extensions Manager window, but DO NOT restart.
2) Insert the first floppy disk in the installation package, and run the installer.
3) If the application does not prompt you to, restart normally (VERY IMPORTANT).
4) After restart, reconfigure Extensions Manager appropriately.
CD installations (System 7.5 or later):
1) Restart, holding down the SPACE BAR until you see the Extensions Manager window open. Select the 'system' set (i.e., 'System 7.5.x' or 'Mac OS x.x base'). Close the window, letting the computer continue starting up.
2) Insert the CD, and run the installer.
3) If the installer application does not prompt you to, restart normally (VERY IMPORTANT).
4) After restart, reconfigure Extensions Manager appropriately.
9 - After all software is running to your satisfaction (or at any point after System installation), you may trash the 'Storage' folder. DO NOT be tempted to drag files from your Storage folder into the new System Folder. This is BY FAR the most common mistake Mac users make when doing a clean install. Better to reinstall from original disks/CD than to attempt a drag-install of specific components from an 'old' System Folder (Storage). From experience, it actually takes less time to reinstall from original disks/CD.
